Versioning and Deprecation

How the Reloop API is versioned, what counts as a breaking change, and how endpoints are deprecated and removed.

The Reloop API is versioned in the URL. The current version is v1, as in https://reloop.sh/api/mail/v1/send. Within a version, Reloop does not make breaking changes. When an endpoint must change in a breaking way, the new behavior ships as a new endpoint or version, and the old one is deprecated with at least 180 days of notice before it is removed.

Non-breaking changes

These can ship at any time without a new version. Build your client to tolerate them:

  • New endpoints.
  • New optional request fields, query parameters and headers.
  • New fields in responses, and new values in fields documented as open-ended.
  • New error code values. Handle an unknown code by its HTTP status. See Errors.
  • New webhook event types.
  • Changes to human-readable text such as message, why and fix.
  • Changes to rate limits. See Usage Limits.

Breaking changes

These only happen in a new version, after the deprecation process below:

  • Removing or renaming an endpoint, request field or response field.
  • Making an optional request field required.
  • Changing a field's type or format.
  • Changing authentication.
  • Changing the meaning of an existing status code or error code.

Fixes for security issues are the one exception. When a vulnerability requires it, Reloop may change behavior with shorter notice and will explain why in the changelog.

Deprecation process

  1. Announce. The deprecation is published in the changelog (RSS) with the replacement and the removal date.

  2. Signal. From that day, every response from the deprecated endpoint carries headers you can monitor:

    Deprecation: @1793491200
    Sunset: Sat, 01 May 2027 00:00:00 GMT
    Link: <https://reloop.sh/docs/api/versioning>; rel="deprecation", </api/contacts/v2/list>; rel="successor-version"
    HeaderMeaning
DeprecationWhen the endpoint was deprecated, as @ plus Unix seconds (RFC 9745).
SunsetThe earliest date the endpoint may be removed, as an HTTP date (RFC 8594).
LinkThis policy (rel="deprecation") and the replacement endpoint, if there is one (rel="successor-version").

The OpenAPI document marks the operation deprecated: true, with the removal date in x-sunset and the replacement in x-successor.

  3. Remind. Organizations still calling the endpoint are contacted before the sunset date.

  4. Remove. On or after the Sunset date, the endpoint may be removed and return 404 (code: not_found).

Sunset is always at least 180 days after Deprecation.

Staying ahead of changes

  • Log a warning whenever a response includes a Deprecation header.
  • Subscribe to the changelog feed.
  • Ignore unknown response fields instead of failing on them.
  • Branch on error code, not on message text.

Self-hosted deployments

Self-hosted Reloop follows the same API versions. Deprecated endpoints are removed in a release after their Sunset date, and the release notes list them.
