**The short version:** for most developer teams in 2026, **Reloop** is the best all-round transactional email API: a modern API, inbound mailboxes, campaigns, and the lowest price per email of any full platform, with the option to self-host. **Postmark** is the pick if transactional deliverability is the only thing you care about. **Amazon SES** is the cheapest raw pipe if you're on AWS and happy to build the rest yourself.

We build Reloop, so factor that in. Every price below comes from each provider's public pricing page, and each section says plainly where that provider beats us.

## How we evaluated

We scored each API on six things that actually change your bill or your week:

1. **Price at real volumes.** Free tiers look alike. We compared 50k and 100k emails a month, plus overage.
2. **Developer experience.** Time from install to delivered email, SDK quality, how readable errors are.
3. **Deliverability tooling.** Suppression, bounce handling, dedicated IPs, separation of transactional and bulk traffic.
4. **Inbound email.** Can you receive and reply, and do you get a webhook or a real mailbox?
5. **Breadth.** Templates, campaigns, automations, contacts. Fewer tools to glue together means fewer things to break.
6. **Lock-in.** Can you leave, or run it yourself, if pricing or policy changes?

We didn't score "deliverability rate". Inbox placement depends mostly on your own domain setup and list hygiene, and no provider publishes comparable numbers. Get [SPF, DKIM and DMARC](/blog/spf-dkim-dmarc-setup-guide) right first and every provider here will reach the inbox.

## 1. Reloop: best overall

Reloop is open-source email infrastructure: a transactional API, SMTP relay, inbound mailboxes, campaigns, automations and webhooks in one product. Use it hosted at [reloop.sh](https://reloop.sh) or run the same code on your own server.

**Pricing:** Free is 3,000 emails a month (100 a day). Pro is $10 for 50,000. Growth is $20 for 100,000 and includes a dedicated IP. Extra mail costs $0.50 per 1,000. Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0.

**Strengths**

- Lowest price of any full platform here: $10 vs $20 (Resend) and $19.95 (SendGrid) at 50k.
- **Inbound as real mailboxes.** Mail is stored and threaded, spam-scored, and readable over the API, the [MCP server](/docs/integrations/ai-tools/mcp-server) or IMAP. That makes it the natural fit for AI agents and support inboxes.
- Transactional, campaigns and event-triggered automations share one API key and one suppression list.
- Errors return `message`, `why` and `fix`, so most failures explain themselves.
- Official SDKs for Node, Python, Go, PHP, Ruby, Rust, Java, .NET and Elixir.
- Fully self-hostable with a [one-command installer](/self-host) or [Coolify](/blog/reloop-coolify-setup).

**Weaknesses**

- Younger than SendGrid, Mailgun or Postmark. Fewer years of edge cases and community answers.
- No A/B testing for campaigns yet.
- Self-hosting means owning IP reputation and uptime yourself.

**Best for:** startups and product teams that want one email platform at a low price, especially if they need inbound mail or might self-host later.

---

## 2. Resend: best hosted developer experience

Resend made "an email API that feels like Stripe" the norm, and its React Email project made writing templates in JSX mainstream.

**Pricing:** Free is 3,000 a month (100 a day). Pro is $20 for 50,000. 100,000 costs $90 a month. Overage is $0.90 per 1,000.

**Strengths**

- Excellent docs and onboarding.
- React Email is first-class.
- A large ecosystem of examples, templates and integrations.
- Broadcasts and audiences for simple marketing sends.

**Weaknesses**

- Prices climb fast past 50k: $90 at 100k vs $20 on Reloop.
- Hosted only. No self-hosting, no source.
- Inbound arrives as a webhook per message, not a mailbox you can thread and reply from.
- Dedicated IPs start on the Scale plan.

**Best for:** small teams that want a polished hosted API and expect to stay under 50k emails a month.

Full breakdown: [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend).

## 3. Postmark: best for deliverability-focused transactional

Postmark has been transactional-first for over a decade and is known for fast, reliable delivery of password resets and receipts. It separates traffic into **message streams**, so bulk mail can't drag down your transactional reputation.

**Pricing:** a free developer plan with 100 emails a month that never expires. Basic starts at $15 for 10,000 emails, with overage at $1.80 per 1,000; Pro and Platform lower the overage to $1.30 and $1.20. Inbound processing needs Pro or above. Dedicated IPs start at $50 a month per IP for senders above 300,000 emails a month.

**Strengths**

- Strong reputation for transactional deliverability.
- Message streams keep transactional and broadcast traffic apart, with up to 15 streams on Basic.
- Clear bounce taxonomy and good activity logs.
- Excellent support.

**Weaknesses**

- The most expensive per email in this list once you pass the base tier.
- Very small free tier (100 a month).
- Inbound requires a higher plan.
- Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams where a delayed password reset costs real money and budget is secondary.

---

## 4. Amazon SES: best for AWS-native teams

SES is AWS's raw email service. It's the cheapest way to send at volume, and it's a building block, not a product.

**Pricing:** $0.10 per 1,000 emails à la carte, plus $0.12 per GB of attachments. Receiving costs $0.10 per 1,000. Dedicated IPs are $24.95 a month each. New AWS accounts get up to $200 in Free Tier credits for six months.

**Strengths**

- Lowest list price per email by a wide margin.
- Deep AWS integration: IAM, SNS, EventBridge, Lambda, S3.
- Scales to very high volume.

**Weaknesses**

- No real dashboard for logs, templates or campaigns. You build that yourself.
- New accounts start in a sandbox and need production access approval.
- Inbound is receipt rules that drop mail into S3 or trigger Lambda, not a mailbox.
- Bounce and complaint handling is yours to wire up through SNS.

**Best for:** AWS-heavy teams with engineering time to build the surrounding tooling.

<Callout type="tip">
  You can get SES pricing with a real product on top: Reloop can route outbound mail through SES (or any SMTP provider) while you keep Reloop's API, logs, templates and suppression list.
</Callout>

---

## 5. SendGrid: best for enterprise procurement

SendGrid, now part of Twilio, sends an enormous share of the world's email and has every enterprise checkbox.

**Pricing:** no permanent free plan; new accounts get a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day. Essentials is $19.95 for 50,000 and $34.95 for 100,000. Pro, which adds a dedicated IP, subusers and SSO, starts at $89.95. Marketing Campaigns is a separate plan.

**Strengths**

- Proven at very high volume, with IP pools and subuser management.
- Mature enterprise compliance programme and procurement path through Twilio.
- Handlebars logic (`{{#if}}`, `{{#each}}`) inside dynamic templates.
- Email validation API on higher plans.

**Weaknesses**

- Two products (Email API and Marketing Campaigns) with separate plans.
- An older API surface and a dashboard that shows its age.
- No free tier after the trial.
- Hosted only.

**Best for:** larger companies already on Twilio that need enterprise contracts more than developer ergonomics.

Full breakdown: [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid).

---

## 6. Mailgun: best for validation and detailed logs

Mailgun, now part of Sinch, is a long-standing developer email API with strong routing and log tooling.

**Pricing:** a free plan at 100 emails a day. Basic is $15 for 10,000. Foundation is $35 for 50,000, with overage from $1.30 per 1,000.

**Strengths**

- Mature email validation (priced as an add-on).
- Inbound routes that match on patterns and forward or POST messages.
- Detailed event logs and search.
- Handlebars templates.

**Weaknesses**

- Campaign tooling is a separate Sinch product.
- Dedicated IPs are a paid add-on.
- Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams that need validation and log search alongside sending, and are happy on a hosted service.

## Developer experience, side by side

The modern APIs look almost identical. Here's one send on Reloop, Resend and SES:

```typescript
// Reloop
const reloop = new Reloop({ apiKey: process.env.RELOOP_API_KEY! });
const { response, emailError } = await reloop.mail.send({
  from: "Acme <hello@mail.acme.com>",
  to: "user@example.com",
  subject: "Welcome",
  html: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>",
});
// Resend
const resend = new Resend(process.env.RESEND_API_KEY);
const { data, error } = await resend.emails.send({
  from: "Acme <hello@acme.com>",
  to: "user@example.com",
  subject: "Welcome",
  html: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>",
});
// Amazon SES (AWS SDK v3)
const ses = new SESv2Client({ region: "us-east-1" });
await ses.send(
  new SendEmailCommand({
    FromEmailAddress: "hello@acme.com",
    Destination: { ToAddresses: ["user@example.com"] },
    Content: {
      Simple: {
        Subject: { Data: "Welcome" },
        Body: { Html: { Data: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>" } },
      },
    },
  }),
);
```

Reloop and Resend are a near find-and-replace apart. SES needs more ceremony, plus IAM credentials and production access. Postmark, SendGrid and Mailgun sit in between.

Every provider here also offers SMTP. If your app or framework already speaks SMTP, switching is a host, port and credential change. On Reloop that's `smtp.reloop.sh` on port 587, with your API key as both username and password.

## How to choose

Answer these in order and stop at the first "yes":

1. **Do you need to self-host or read the source?** → Reloop.
2. **Do you need to receive email into mailboxes, for an AI agent or a support inbox?** → Reloop.
3. **Are you all-in on AWS with time to build tooling, and cost per email is everything?** → Amazon SES.
4. **Is transactional deliverability the only metric, with budget to match?** → Postmark.
5. **Do you need enterprise contracts through Twilio?** → SendGrid.
6. **Do you need email validation and log search above all?** → Mailgun.
7. **Do you want a polished hosted API and expect to stay small?** → Resend.
8. **None of the above, and you want the most for the money?** → Reloop.

<Callout type="info">
  Price your volume twelve months out, not today. Switching providers means re-verifying DNS and re-warming reputation, so pick the one that still makes sense at 10× your current volume.
</Callout>

## Switching providers

Moving between modern email APIs is mostly DNS work and a client swap. We've written detailed guides:

- [Migrating from SendGrid to Reloop](/blog/migrating-from-sendgrid): DNS, suppression import, field mapping, webhooks and a traffic ramp.
- [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend): includes a five-step switching checklist.
- [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid): where each one wins.

Whichever way you move, bring your suppression list with you and ramp traffic over a week or two. Check your domain on the free [domain reputation checker](/tools/domain-reputation-checker) before and after the switch.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What is the cheapest transactional email API?">
    Amazon SES has the lowest list price at $0.10 per 1,000 emails, but it's
    a raw sending service with no dashboard or templates. Among full
    platforms, Reloop is cheapest: $10 for 50,000 and $20 for 100,000, then
    $0.50 per 1,000.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Which email API has the best deliverability?">
    Postmark has the strongest reputation for transactional delivery, helped
    by strict separation of transactional and bulk streams. In practice your
    own SPF, DKIM, DMARC and list hygiene matter more than the provider. All
    six here will reach the inbox with a well-configured domain.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is there an open-source alternative to SendGrid and Resend?">
    Yes. Reloop is open source under Apache 2.0, with the same kind of
    modern API, and you can run it on your own server or use the hosted
    version.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Which email API is best for AI agents?">
    One that gives agents a real mailbox to read and reply from, not just an
    inbound webhook. Reloop provides mailboxes with threads over the API, an
    MCP server and IMAP. See
    [email infrastructure for AI agents](/blog/email-infrastructure-for-ai-agents).
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do I need a dedicated IP?">
    Usually not until you send a few hundred thousand emails a month
