**The short version:** if you like Resend's API but want it cheaper, with real inboxes and the option to self-host, **Reloop** is the closest match: same API shape, $10 for 50k emails instead of $20, and open source. If you want open source on top of Amazon SES, look at **useSend**. If transactional deliverability is all you care about, **Postmark**. If you want the cheapest raw pipe and you're on AWS, **Amazon SES**.

Resend set the bar for a modern email API, and plenty of teams are happy on it. The reasons people look elsewhere are usually the same few:

- **Price at volume.** The free tier is generous (3,000 a month), but the next steps are $20 for 50k and $35 for 100k, with $0.90 per extra 1,000.
- **Hosted only.** There's no way to run Resend yourself, for data residency, security review or cost.
- **Inbound is a webhook.** Resend can receive mail and post each message to your webhook, but storage, threading and replies are yours to build.
- **Dedicated IPs** need the $90 Scale plan plus a $30/mo add-on.

We build Reloop, so weigh this accordingly. Every price below comes from our researched head-to-head posts and each provider's public pricing page, and each section says where that alternative beats us.

## The comparison table

| | Resend | Reloop | useSend | Postmark | Amazon SES | SendGrid | Mailgun | MailerSend |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Free tier** | 3,000 / mo (100 / day) | 6,000 / mo (200 / day) | 3,000 / mo (100 / day) | 100 / mo | $200 credits, 6 months | 60-day trial, 100 / day | 100 / day, trial | 500 / mo |
| **~50,000 / mo** | $20 | **$10** | $20 | $87 | ~$5 | $19.95 | $35 | $35 |
| **~100,000 / mo** | $35 | **$20** | $40 | $177 | ~$10 | $34.95 | $90 | $68 |
| **Inbound** | Webhook | Mailboxes, API, MCP, IMAP | Roadmap | Webhook | Receipt rules | Parse webhook | Routes | Forwarding |
| **Campaigns** | Broadcasts | Yes + automations | Yes | Broadcast streams | No | Separate plans | Limited | Via MailerLite |
| **Open source** | No | Yes (Apache 2.0) | Yes (AGPL) | No | No | No | No | No |
| **Self-host** | No | Yes | Yes (needs SES) | No | No | No | No | No |

Postmark figures are Basic list price plus overage; Mailgun at 100k is its $90 Scale plan; useSend is our math from its per-email rates. Cloudflare Email Service is covered in its own section, since it bills through Workers Paid.

## 1. Reloop: best overall Resend alternative

[Reloop](/) is open-source email infrastructure: a transactional API, SMTP relay, inbound mailboxes, contacts, campaigns, automations and webhooks. Its API follows the same shape as Resend's on purpose, so switching is mostly a client swap.

```typescript
const reloop = new Reloop({ apiKey: process.env.RELOOP_API_KEY! });
const { response, emailError } = await reloop.mail.send({
  from: "Acme <hello@mail.acme.com>",
  to: "user@example.com",
  subject: "Welcome",
  html: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>",
});
```

**Pricing:** Free for 6,000 emails a month (200 a day), double Resend's free tier. Pro is $10 for 50,000, Growth is $20 for 100,000 with a dedicated IP, and extra mail is $0.50 per 1,000. Or skip the subscription and buy pay-as-you-go credits at $0.50 per 1,000, valid for 6 months. Self-hosting has no per-email fee.

**Strengths**

- **Half Resend's price at 50k and about 40% less at 100k.** Over a year at 100k a month, that's $180 saved, or $1,200 if you need a dedicated IP.
- **Inbound mail into real inboxes.** Messages are stored, threaded, spam-scored and readable over the API, the [MCP server](/docs/integrations/ai-tools/mcp-server) or IMAP, so AI agents and support teams can reply in-thread.
- **Transactional, campaigns and event automations** in one product with one suppression list.
- **Open source (Apache 2.0)** and self-hostable with a [one-command installer](/self-host). Reloop Cloud runs on Hetzner, a German hosting company, with EU data centers.
- **Dedicated IP on the $20 plan**, where Resend needs the $90 Scale plan plus a $30/mo add-on.
- **Errors that explain themselves**, with `why` and `fix` fields.

**Weaknesses**

- Smaller ecosystem of community examples than Resend.
- Hosted inboxes are capped by plan (3 on Free, 5 on Pro, 10 on Growth); self-hosted is unlimited.

**Best for:** teams past 50k emails a month, anyone building AI agents that handle email, and teams that want open source or self-hosting. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend). ## 2. useSend: best open source on Amazon SES

[useSend](https://usesend.com) (formerly Unsend) is an open-source Resend alternative under AGPL-3.0. It wraps Amazon SES with a clean API, dashboard, contacts and campaigns, and offers a hosted cloud.

**Pricing:** Free for 3,000 a month (100 a day). Paid is usage-based with a $10 monthly minimum: $0.0004 per transactional email and $0.001 per marketing email.

**Strengths**

- Resend-style API and SDK, open source.
- At millions of transactional emails a month, $0.40 per 1,000 is hard to beat on a hosted plan.
- Self-hosting lets Amazon handle IP reputation.

**Weaknesses**

- Inbound email is on the roadmap, not shipped.
- Self-hosting needs an AWS account, SES sandbox approval, SNS callbacks and GitHub OAuth.
- Still marked beta.

**Best for:** teams already on AWS that want an open-source, SES-backed Resend. Full comparison: [Reloop vs useSend](/blog/reloop-vs-usesend).

## 3. Postmark: best for transactional deliverability

[Postmark](https://postmarkapp.com) has focused on transactional email for over a decade, with separate message streams so marketing mail never affects password resets.

**Pricing:** a developer plan with 100 emails a month. Basic is $15 for 10,000, then $1.80 per 1,000 ($87 at 50k, $177 at 100k at list price). Pro and Platform lower overage to $1.30 and $1.20.

**Strengths:** strong deliverability reputation, message streams, excellent docs and support.

**Weaknesses:** the most expensive option here per email, a tiny free tier, no contacts or automations, and hosted only.

**Best for:** teams where transactional inbox placement is the only priority and budget isn't. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Postmark](/blog/reloop-vs-postmark).

---

## 4. Amazon SES: cheapest raw sending pipe

[Amazon SES](https://aws.amazon.com/ses/) is a sending pipe at $0.10 per 1,000 emails. Resend itself sends through SES.

**Pricing:** $200 in AWS Free Tier credits for the first 6 months, then $0.10 per 1,000 plus $0.12 per GB of outbound data. About $10 for 100k.

**Strengths:** the lowest per-email price, IAM, SNS and Lambda integration.

**Weaknesses:** you build the product around it: sandbox exit, bounce and complaint handling through SNS, suppression, templates, logs and inbound.

**Best for:** AWS-native teams with engineering time to build what Resend gave them. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Amazon SES](/blog/reloop-vs-aws-ses).

---

## 5. SendGrid: best for enterprise procurement

[SendGrid](https://sendgrid.com), part of Twilio, is the incumbent for large organizations.

**Pricing:** a 60-day trial at 100 a day. Essentials is $19.95 for 50k and $34.95 for 100k; Pro, with dedicated IPs, subusers and SSO, starts at $89.95.

**Strengths:** enterprise compliance, subuser management, full Handlebars logic in templates.

**Weaknesses:** no lasting free tier, marketing on separate plans, inbound is a parse webhook.

**Best for:** companies already inside Twilio that need procurement checkboxes. Full comparison: [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid).

---

## 6. Mailgun: best for routing and validation

[Mailgun](https://www.mailgun.com) is one of the original developer email APIs, with inbound routes, webhooks and email validation.

**Pricing:** a trial at 100 a day. Basic is $15 for 10,000; Foundation is $35 for 50,000, with overage from $1.30 per 1,000.

**Strengths:** regex inbound routes, detailed logs, validation built in.

**Weaknesses:** no real free tier, validation is an add-on, marketing sits in a separate product.

**Best for:** teams that need inbound routing rules and validation from one vendor. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Mailgun](/blog/reloop-vs-mailgun).

---

## 7. MailerSend: best no-code builder

[MailerSend](https://www.mailersend.com) is a developer API with the most complete no-code side here.

**Pricing:** free for 500 emails a month. Hobby is $7 for 5,000; Starter is $35 for 50k and $68 for 100k.

**Strengths:** drag-and-drop builder, SMS, email verification and split testing.

**Weaknesses:** small free tier, inbound is forwarded rather than stored, and each forward counts toward your quota.

**Best for:** teams where non-developers edit emails. Full comparison: [Reloop vs MailerSend](/blog/reloop-vs-mailersend).

---

## 8. Cloudflare Email Service: best for apps on Workers

[Cloudflare Email Service](https://developers.cloudflare.com/email-service/) adds sending to Cloudflare's Email Routing. From a Worker it's one binding and one `send()` call.

**Pricing:** sending to any recipient needs Workers Paid ($5 a month minimum), which includes 3,000 emails, then $0.35 per 1,000. About $21 at 50k and $39 at 100k.

**Strengths:** cheap at high volume, one `send()` call from a Worker, and unlimited inbound through Email Routing.

**Weaknesses:** sending is in public beta, your domain must use Cloudflare DNS, and it's transactional only with no templates, contacts or campaigns.

**Best for:** apps that live entirely on Workers and send only transactional mail. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Cloudflare Email Service](/blog/reloop-vs-cloudflare-email).

---

## How to choose

- **"We like Resend's API but the bill is growing."** Reloop. Same shape, $10 at 50k and $20 at 100k.
- **"We need open source."** Reloop (Apache 2.0, its own MTA) or useSend (AGPL, on SES).
- **"We need agents or humans to read and reply to inbound mail."** Reloop, the only option here with stored mailboxes, MCP and IMAP.
- **"Deliverability for receipts is everything."** Postmark.
- **"We're on AWS and have engineers to spare."** Amazon SES.
- **"Procurement needs a big vendor."** SendGrid.
- **"Our app runs on Cloudflare Workers."** Cloudflare Email Service.

## Switching from Resend

Most of the work is DNS, not code.

1. **Add your domain** in the new provider and publish its DKIM record. Merge its SPF include into your existing SPF record; never publish a second one.
2. **Swap the client.** For Reloop, replace `resend.emails.send` with `reloop.mail.send` and rename `replyTo` to `reply_to` and `scheduledAt` to `scheduled_at`.
3. **Move templates.** React Email components keep working. Stored templates in Reloop use triple braces: `{{{first_name}}}`.
4. **Import suppressions** so you don't email addresses that bounced or unsubscribed.
5. **Point webhooks** at a new handler. Reloop's events (`email.delivered`, `email.bounced` and so on) are signed with HMAC-SHA256 in the `Reloop-Signature` header.
6. **Ramp traffic** from 10% to 100% over one to two weeks, then remove Resend's DNS records.

## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What is the best open-source alternative to Resend?">
    Reloop and useSend are both open source. Reloop is Apache 2.0 and runs its
    own mail server, so self-hosting needs no AWS account, and it receives
    mail into inboxes. useSend is AGPL and sends through Amazon SES, which
    handles IP reputation for you but needs an AWS account and sandbox exit.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What is the cheapest Resend alternative?">
    For raw sending, Amazon SES at $0.10 per 1,000. For a full platform,
    Reloop at $10 for 50,000 and $20 for 100,000, compared with $20 and $35 on
    Resend.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I self-host a Resend alternative?">
    Yes. Reloop installs with one command on your own server and keeps the
    same API, so you can start on Reloop Cloud and move later by changing the
    SDK's `baseUrl`. useSend can also be self-hosted on top of Amazon SES.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Do React Email templates work with these alternatives?">
    Any provider that accepts HTML works with React Email, since you can render
    components to HTML. Reloop's SDK also accepts the component directly in a
    `react` field.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Which Resend alternative is best for AI agents?">
    Reloop. Agents get their own mailboxes, can read threads and reply over
    the API, the MCP server or IMAP. See
