**The short version:** if you're leaving Postmark because of the bill, **Reloop** sends the same transactional mail for $10 at 50,000 emails a month (Postmark Basic with overage is $87), adds inbound mailboxes, campaigns and automations, and is open source. **Resend** is the closest match on developer experience. **Amazon SES** is the cheapest raw pipe if you'll build the rest yourself.

We build Reloop, so weigh our pick accordingly. Every competitor price below comes from the provider's public pricing page, linked in each section, and each section says where that provider beats us.

## Why teams look for a Postmark alternative

Postmark is good at what it does. It has been transactional-first for over a decade, and its **message streams** keep bulk mail from hurting your transactional reputation. People don't usually leave because mail stops arriving. They leave because of what it costs and what it doesn't do:

- **Overage adds up fast.** Basic is $15 for 10,000 emails, then $1.80 per extra 1,000. At 50,000 a month that's about $87; at 100,000, about $177.
- **The free plan is a test plan.** 100 emails a month, enough to try the API, not to run a small app.
- **Inbound needs Pro.** Inbound processing isn't on Basic.
- **Dedicated IPs are gated.** $50 a month per IP, for senders above 300,000 emails a month.
- **It isn't a marketing platform.** There's a broadcast stream, but no contact database with segments and no automation builder.
- **Hosted only.** No source, no self-hosting.

If none of those bother you, stay. If one does, here are the options.

Mailgun's 100k figure is its Scale plan ($90 for 100,000). ZeptoMail's figures use the widely listed $2.50 per 10,000-email credit, which varies by region. SES is send-only, before data transfer.

## 1. Reloop: best overall Postmark alternative

Reloop is open-source email infrastructure: a transactional API, SMTP relay, inbound mailboxes, contacts, campaigns, automations and webhooks in one product. Use it hosted (Reloop Cloud runs on Hetzner, a German hosting company, with EU data centers) or run the same code on your own server.

**Pricing:** Free is 6,000 emails a month (200 a day). Pro is $10 for 50,000. Growth is $20 for 100,000 and includes a dedicated IP. Extra mail is $0.50 per 1,000. Or skip the plan and buy prepaid credits at $0.50 per 1,000, valid for 6 months. Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0.

**Strengths**

- **About an eighth of Postmark's price at 50k**: $10 vs about $87 on Basic with overage, and $20 vs about $177 at 100k.
- **A free tier you can run on**: 6,000 a month instead of 100.
- **Inbound as real mailboxes on every plan.** Mail is stored, threaded, spam-scored with Rspamd, and readable over the API, the [MCP server](/docs/integrations/ai-tools/mcp-server) or IMAP. Hosted plans include 3, 5 or 10 inboxes on Free, Pro and Growth.
- **A dedicated IP at $20**, without sending 300,000 emails a month.
- Transactional mail, campaigns and event-triggered automations share one API key and one suppression list.
- Errors come back with `message`, `why` and `fix`.

**Weaknesses**

- Younger than Postmark, with a shorter track record and fewer community answers.
- No separate message streams like Postmark's. Reloop isolates traffic with per-domain throttling and pauses on its own MTA (KumoMTA) instead.
- Open and click tracking are on for new domains; switch them off per domain if you want Postmark-style plain sends.

**Best for:** teams sending more than 10,000 emails a month who want Postmark's job done for less, plus inbound and campaigns in the same place.

## 2. Resend: closest developer experience

Resend made the clean, Stripe-style email API the norm, and its React Email project made JSX templates mainstream. If what you like about Postmark is a simple API and good docs, Resend feels familiar.

**Pricing:** Free is 3,000 a month (100 a day). Pro is $20 for 50,000 and $35 for 100,000. Overage is $0.90 per 1,000.

**Strengths:** excellent docs and onboarding, first-class React Email, a large ecosystem of examples, and broadcasts for simple marketing sends.

**Weaknesses:** cheaper than Postmark at 50k but still double Reloop, and $35 at 100k vs $20. Hosted only. Inbound is a webhook per message, not a mailbox. A dedicated IP needs the $90 Scale plan plus a $30/mo add-on.

**Best for:** small teams that want a polished hosted API and expect to stay under 50k emails a month.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend).

## 3. MailerSend: best with a visual builder

MailerSend is a developer-first transactional API from the team behind MailerLite, with a stronger no-code side than Postmark: a drag-and-drop builder, SMS, email verification and split testing.

**Pricing:** Free is 500 emails a month. Hobby is $7 for 5,000. Starter is $35 for 50,000 and $68 for 100,000, with overage at $1.30 per 1,000. Professional is $110 for 50k and $140 for 100k, and adds the dedicated IP add-on.

**Strengths:** non-developers can edit emails, SMS and verification come from the same vendor, and DMARC and blocklist monitoring are included on Starter and up.

**Weaknesses:** inbound mail is parsed and forwarded, not stored, and each forward counts against your quota. Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams where marketers or support staff edit transactional templates.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs MailerSend](/blog/reloop-vs-mailersend).

---

## 4. Mailgun: best for routing-heavy setups

Mailgun is one of the original developer email APIs, with mature sending, email validation and **inbound routes** that match incoming mail by pattern and forward it.

**Pricing:** a trial at 100 emails a day. Basic is $15 for 10,000; Foundation is $35 for 50,000. Overage starts at $1.30 per 1,000 ($1.80 on Basic). Dedicated IPs are a paid add-on.

**Strengths:** long track record, flexible inbound routing, built-in email validation (priced as an add-on), Handlebars templates.

**Weaknesses:** at 100k you're around $100 with overage. Marketing is a separate Sinch product. Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams that want a mature API with flexible inbound routing rules.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Mailgun](/blog/reloop-vs-mailgun).

## 5. Amazon SES: cheapest raw sending

SES is the lowest list price in email: $0.10 per 1,000. It's a sending pipe, not a product. Everything around it is yours to build.

**Pricing:** $0.10 per 1,000 emails plus $0.12 per GB of outbound data. New AWS accounts get $200 in Free Tier credits for the first 6 months.

**Strengths:** cheapest per email at any volume, deep AWS integration (IAM, SNS, Lambda, EventBridge).

**Weaknesses:** you build bounce and complaint handling, suppression, logs, template editing and dashboards yourself. Inbound goes through receipt rules to S3, SNS or Lambda. You also need to leave the SES sandbox before you can email real users.

**Best for:** AWS-native teams with engineers to own the glue, or senders at millions of emails a month.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Amazon SES](/blog/reloop-vs-aws-ses).

---

## 6. SendGrid: best for enterprise procurement

SendGrid (Twilio) is the incumbent: a mature enterprise program, subusers, IP pools and full Handlebars templating.

**Pricing:** a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day. Essentials is $19.95 for 50,000 and $34.95 for 100,000. Dedicated IPs, subusers and SSO start on Pro from $89.95.

**Strengths:** procurement-friendly, mature compliance program, Handlebars logic (`#if`, `#each`) in templates.

**Weaknesses:** no permanent free plan, marketing is on separate plans, inbound is the Inbound Parse webhook. Hosted only.

**Best for:** larger companies whose procurement prefers an established vendor.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid).

---

## 7. ZeptoMail: best pay-as-you-go

ZeptoMail is Zoho's transactional-only service, now branded as part of Zoho CPaaS. You buy credits of 10,000 emails and spend them down.

**Pricing:** the first credit is free. Credits are widely listed at $2.50 each, vary by region, and expire after 6 months. That's about $12.50 at 50k and $25 at 100k.

**Strengths:** above roughly 150,000 emails a month it's cheaper per email than Reloop. No monthly fee if your volume is spiky.

**Weaknesses:** transactional only; marketing mail isn't allowed. No inbound storage, no automations. Credits expire.

**Best for:** steady high-volume transactional senders who want to pay per email.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs ZeptoMail](/blog/reloop-vs-zeptomail).

## How to choose

- **"Postmark is too expensive at our volume."** Reloop for the full platform at $10 / $20, ZeptoMail for pure per-email cost at high volume, SES if you'll build the tooling.
- **"We like Postmark's API and docs."** Resend or Reloop; both are clean, modern APIs.
- **"Marketers need to edit templates."** MailerSend.
- **"We need to receive and reply to email."** Reloop, which stores inbound mail in threaded mailboxes on every plan.
- **"We need a dedicated IP below 300k a month."** Reloop includes one on Growth at $20.
- **"Legal wants source code or self-hosting."** Reloop is the only option here that's open source.

<Callout type="tip">
  If transactional reputation is the reason you chose Postmark, keep that discipline wherever you go: send transactional and marketing mail from different subdomains, and keep a single suppression list. Our [transactional email best practices](/blog/transactional-email-best-practices) cover the setup.
</Callout>

## Switching from Postmark

1. **Add your domain** in the new provider and publish its DKIM record. Merge the new SPF include into your existing record; never publish a second SPF record.
2. **Swap the client.** Postmark uses PascalCase fields (`From`, `HtmlBody`, `ReplyTo`); most alternatives use lowercase (`from`, `html`, `reply_to`).
3. **Move templates.** Postmark templates use Mustachio. On Reloop, change placeholders to triple braces: `{{{first_name}}}`.
4. **Export your suppressions** and import them, so you don't re-mail addresses that bounced or complained.
5. **Point webhooks** at a new handler. Reloop signs events with HMAC-SHA256 in the `Reloop-Signature` header.
6. **Ramp traffic** from 10% to 100% over a week or two, then remove Postmark's DNS records.

The [Reloop vs Postmark](/blog/reloop-vs-postmark) post has the step-by-step version, and the [SendGrid migration guide](/blog/migrating-from-sendgrid) shows a traffic-split flag that works for any provider. ## FAQ

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="What is the cheapest Postmark alternative?">
    Amazon SES has the lowest list price at $0.10 per 1,000, but it's a raw
    pipe. Among full platforms, Reloop is $10 for 50,000 and $20 for 100,000.
    Above roughly 150,000 a month, ZeptoMail's credits work out cheaper per
    email, for transactional mail only.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Is there an open-source alternative to Postmark?">
    Yes. Reloop is open source under Apache 2.0. You can use the hosted
    version or run it on your own server with a one-command installer.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Will my deliverability drop if I leave Postmark?">
    Not if your domain is set up properly. Inbox placement depends mostly on
    SPF, DKIM, DMARC, list hygiene and steady sending patterns. Ramp traffic
    over a week or two and watch bounce and complaint rates. Check your
    domain with the free [domain reputation checker](/tools/domain-reputation-checker)

  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Which Postmark alternative handles inbound email best?">
    Reloop stores inbound mail in threaded mailboxes you can read and reply
    to over the API, MCP or IMAP, on every plan. Most others forward each
    message to a webhook, and Postmark itself needs Pro for inbound.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does any alternative have message streams like Postmark?">
    Not under that name. The common pattern is to send transactional and
    marketing mail from separate subdomains so their reputations stay
    separate. Reloop also throttles per domain and pauses sending
    automatically when bounce or complaint rates spike.
