**The short version:** Mailtrap is two products, so the right alternative depends on which one you're replacing. **For production sending**, **Reloop** is $10 at 50,000 emails a month (Mailtrap is $20) and includes a dedicated IP at $20 for 100k, where Mailtrap needs its $85 Business plan. **For testing**, **Mailpit** is a free, open-source capture server you run locally or in CI. Many teams use one of each.

We build Reloop, so weigh our pick accordingly. Every competitor price below comes from the provider's public pricing page, linked in each section, and each section says where that provider beats us.

## Why teams look for a Mailtrap alternative

Mailtrap started as the place developers send test email so it never reaches real users. It later added a production sending API and a marketing product. It's well built, and its testing sandbox is genuinely good. Teams look elsewhere for a few reasons:

- **Three products, three bills.** Email API/SMTP (sending), Email Sandbox (testing) and Email Marketing are priced separately, each with its own free tier.
- **Dedicated IPs mean Business.** A dedicated IP starts with the Business plan at $85 for 100,000 emails.
- **The sandbox free tier is small.** 50 test emails a month; paid sandbox plans start at $14 a month billed annually.
- **Marketing is contact-priced and separate.** The free tier allows 500 contacts and 1,500 emails a month.
- **Hosted only.** No source and no self-hosting.

If you're happy with both products, stay. If not, here are the options for each job.

## 1. Reloop: best overall for sending

Reloop is open-source email infrastructure: a transactional API, SMTP relay, inbound mailboxes, contacts, campaigns, automations and webhooks in one product. Use it hosted (Reloop Cloud runs on Hetzner, a German hosting company, with EU data centers) or run the same code on your own server.

**Pricing:** Free is 6,000 emails a month (200 a day). Pro is $10 for 50,000. Growth is $20 for 100,000 and includes a dedicated IP. Extra mail is $0.50 per 1,000. Or skip the subscription and buy pay-as-you-go credits at $0.50 per 1,000, valid for 6 months. Self-hosting is free under Apache 2.0.

**Strengths**

- **Half Mailtrap's price at 50k**: $10 vs $20, and $20 vs $30 at 100k.
- **A dedicated IP at $20**, instead of moving to an $85 Business plan.
- **Campaigns and event-triggered automations included**, with one suppression list for transactional and marketing mail. No separate contact-priced marketing product.
- **Inbound as real mailboxes.** Mail is stored, threaded, spam-scored with Rspamd, and readable over the API, the [MCP server](/docs/integrations/ai-tools/mcp-server) or IMAP. Hosted plans include 3, 5 or 10 inboxes on Free, Pro and Growth.
- Errors come back with `message`, `why` and `fix`.

**Weaknesses**

- **No capture-only test sandbox.** For staging, keep Mailtrap's sandbox or run Mailpit (below).
- Open and click tracking are on for new domains; switch them off per domain if you don't want them.

**Best for:** teams sending more than a few thousand emails a month who want sending, inboxes and campaigns in one place.

## 2. Resend: closest developer experience

Resend made the clean, Stripe-style email API the norm, and its React Email project made JSX templates mainstream.

**Pricing:** Free is 3,000 a month (100 a day). Pro is $20 for 50,000 and $35 for 100,000. Overage is $0.90 per 1,000.

**Strengths:** excellent docs and onboarding, first-class React Email, a large ecosystem of examples, and broadcasts for simple marketing sends.

**Weaknesses:** the same as Mailtrap at 50k, and $35 at 100k vs Mailtrap's $30. Hosted only. Inbound is a webhook per message. A dedicated IP needs the $90 Scale plan plus a $30/mo add-on.

**Best for:** small teams that want a polished hosted API and expect to stay under 50k a month.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend).

## 3. Postmark: best transactional reputation

Postmark has been transactional-first for over a decade, and its **message streams** keep bulk mail from hurting your transactional reputation.

**Pricing:** 100 emails a month free. Basic is $15 for 10,000, then $1.80 per extra 1,000, so about $87 at 50k and $177 at 100k. Dedicated IPs are $50 a month for senders above 300,000 a month.

**Strengths:** strong reputation for inbox placement, message streams, clear docs.

**Weaknesses:** much more expensive than Mailtrap past 10k. Inbound needs Pro. Hosted only.

**Best for:** low-volume senders who value Postmark's reputation over price.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Postmark](/blog/reloop-vs-postmark).

---

## 4. MailerSend: best with a visual builder

MailerSend is a transactional API from the team behind MailerLite, with a drag-and-drop builder, SMS, email verification and split testing.

**Pricing:** Free is 500 emails a month. Hobby is $7 for 5,000. Starter is $35 for 50,000 and $68 for 100,000, with overage at $1.30 per 1,000. Professional adds the dedicated IP add-on.

**Strengths:** non-developers can edit templates, SMS and verification come from the same vendor, and DMARC and blocklist monitoring are included on Starter and up.

**Weaknesses:** more than Mailtrap at both 50k and 100k. Inbound mail is forwarded, not stored, and each forward counts against your quota. Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams where marketers or support staff edit transactional templates.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs MailerSend](/blog/reloop-vs-mailersend).

---

## 5. Mailgun: best for inbound routing

Mailgun is one of the original developer email APIs, with mature sending, email validation and **inbound routes** that match incoming mail by pattern and forward it.

**Pricing:** a trial at 100 emails a day. Basic is $15 for 10,000; Foundation is $35 for 50,000. Overage starts at $1.30 per 1,000. Dedicated IPs are a paid add-on.

**Strengths:** long track record, flexible inbound routing, built-in email validation, Handlebars templates.

**Weaknesses:** around $100 at 100k with overage. Marketing is a separate Sinch product. Hosted only.

**Best for:** teams that need flexible inbound routing rules.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs Mailgun](/blog/reloop-vs-mailgun).

---

## 6. SendGrid: best for enterprise procurement

SendGrid (Twilio) is the incumbent, with a mature enterprise program, subusers, IP pools and full Handlebars templating.

**Pricing:** a 60-day trial at 100 emails a day. Essentials is $19.95 for 50,000 and $34.95 for 100,000. Dedicated IPs, subusers and SSO start on Pro from $89.95.

**Strengths:** procurement-friendly, mature compliance program, Handlebars logic in templates.

**Weaknesses:** no permanent free plan, marketing is on separate plans, inbound is the Inbound Parse webhook. Hosted only.

**Best for:** larger companies whose procurement prefers an established vendor.

Full comparison: [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid).

## 7. Mailpit: best free testing sandbox

If you use Mailtrap for its sandbox, the closest free replacement is [Mailpit](https://github.com/axllent/mailpit), an MIT-licensed email testing tool. It runs an SMTP server that captures everything you send, with a web UI to inspect it. It's the actively maintained successor in spirit to MailHog, which no longer gets updates.

**Pricing:** free and open source.

**Strengths**

- A single static binary or a Docker image; the web UI is on port `8025` and SMTP on `1025` by default.
- A REST API for automated integration tests, so CI can assert that an email was sent and check its contents.
- HTML compatibility scoring across mail clients, link checking and SpamAssassin spam scoring.

**Weaknesses**

- You run it yourself, per developer or per environment. There's no shared hosted inbox for the whole team out of the box.
- It's a testing tool only; it doesn't deliver mail to real inboxes in production.

**Best for:** local development and CI. Point your app's staging SMTP settings at Mailpit, and production at your real sender.

---

## How to choose

- **"We need to cut the sending bill."** Reloop: $10 at 50k and $20 at 100k with a dedicated IP.
- **"We need a dedicated IP without the Business plan."** Reloop includes one on Growth at $20.
- **"We like Mailtrap's free sending tier and send under 4,000 a month."** Mailtrap is hard to beat there; stay.
- **"We only used Mailtrap for testing."** Mailpit locally and in CI, or keep Mailtrap's sandbox if you want a hosted, shared inbox.
- **"Marketers edit our templates."** MailerSend.
- **"Legal wants source code or self-hosting."** Reloop is the only sender here that's open source.

<Callout type="tip">
You don't have to replace both products at once. A common setup is a capture tool (Mailtrap's sandbox or Mailpit) for staging and a production sender for real users. Keep the two configured by environment so staging can never email a customer.
</Callout>

## Switching from Mailtrap sending

1. **Add your domain** in the new provider and publish its DKIM record. Merge the new SPF include into your existing record; never publish a second SPF record.
2. **Swap the client.** On Reloop, replace `mailtrap.send` with `reloop.mail.send`, turn `{ name, email }` objects into `"Name <email>"` strings, and check `emailError` instead of catching.
3. **Move templates.** On Reloop, change placeholders to triple braces: `{{{user_name}}}`.
4. **Import your suppression list** so you don't re-mail addresses that bounced or complained.
5. **Point webhooks** at a new handler. Reloop signs events with HMAC-SHA256 in the `Reloop-Signature` header.
6. **Split environments.** Staging SMTP points at your sandbox (Mailtrap or Mailpit); production points at `smtp.reloop.sh` on port 587 with STARTTLS, using your API key as both username and password.
7. **Ramp traffic** from 10% to 100% over a week or two, then remove Mailtrap's sending DNS records.

The [Reloop vs Mailtrap](/blog/reloop-vs-mailtrap) post has the detailed version, and the [SendGrid migration guide](/blog/migrating-from-sendgrid) shows a traffic-split flag that works for any provider.
