**Amazon SES is the cheapest way to send email from a server, and that's exactly why teams outgrow it.** At $0.10 per 1,000 emails nothing hosted beats it on the line item. But SES is a sending pipe, not a product. Before your first password reset reaches a real user, you request production access out of the sandbox, wire bounce and complaint events through SNS or EventBridge, build a suppression store, and find somewhere to keep delivery logs that support can actually search.

**The short version:** if you want SES-like prices with the product already built, **Reloop** is the closest swap ($10 for 50k, $20 for 100k, open source). If your app lives on Cloudflare Workers, **Cloudflare Email Service** is the native choice. If you only send transactional mail and want prepaid credits, look at **ZeptoMail**. If deliverability is your only metric, **Postmark**.

We build Reloop, so weigh our entry accordingly. Every other provider's facts come from our researched head-to-head posts, linked in each section, and each section says where that provider beats us.

## Why teams look for an Amazon SES alternative

SES is a great piece of infrastructure. The reasons people leave are almost always about what's missing around it:

- **The sandbox.** New accounts can only send to verified addresses until AWS approves production access, and requests are sometimes denied or need a second round.
- **Glue code.** Bounces, complaints and deliveries arrive through a configuration set and SNS, EventBridge or Firehose. You build the consumer, the storage and the suppression logic yourself.
- **No logs or dashboard.** "Did the reset email arrive?" means digging through CloudWatch or an internal tool you had to write.
- **Templates for engineers only.** Templates are API-managed, so non-engineers can't edit copy without a deploy.
- **No marketing, no real inbound.** Newsletters need another tool, and inbound mail lands in S3, SNS or Lambda as raw messages.
- **Account risk.** AWS reviews accounts whose bounce or complaint rates stay high and can pause sending, so you need your own monitoring.

None of that matters if you have a platform team and send millions of emails a month. For everyone else, the engineering time costs more than the per-email savings. Full breakdown: [Reloop vs Amazon SES](/blog/reloop-vs-aws-ses).

## 1. Reloop: best overall Amazon SES alternative

[Reloop](/) is open-source email infrastructure: a transactional API, SMTP relay, templates, logs, signed webhooks, inbound mailboxes, contacts, campaigns and event automations in one product. It runs its own MTA (KumoMTA) rather than reselling SES, and **Reloop Cloud runs on Hetzner, a German hosting company, with EU data centers**.

**Pricing:** Free for 6,000 emails a month (200 a day). Pro is $10 for 50,000, Growth is $20 for 100,000 with a dedicated IP included, and extra mail is $0.50 per 1,000. Or prepay credits at $0.50 per 1,000, valid for 6 months. Self-hosting under Apache 2.0 has no per-email fee at all.

```typescript
const reloop = new Reloop({ apiKey: process.env.RELOOP_API_KEY! });
const { response, emailError } = await reloop.mail.send({
  from: "Acme <hello@mail.acme.com>",
  to: "user@example.com",
  subject: "Welcome",
  html: "<p>Thanks for signing up.</p>",
});
```

**Strengths**

- **Everything you'd build around SES is already there**: suppression, searchable logs, webhooks signed with `Reloop-Signature`, and templates with `{{{variables}}}`.
- No sandbox. Verify your domain and send.
- Inbound mail lands in real mailboxes with threads, readable over the API, the MCP server or IMAP (3, 5 and 10 hosted inboxes on Free, Pro and Growth).
- Campaigns and event automations share one suppression list with transactional mail.
- Open source, so you can move to your own servers and keep the same API.

**Weaknesses**

- **SES is cheaper per email at high volume.** At a million emails a month SES is about $100 sending-only; Reloop is $470 hosted. Self-hosting closes that gap, but then you run it.
- No IAM integration. You authenticate with an API key, not AWS roles.

**Best for:** teams that picked SES for the price and are tired of maintaining the glue. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Amazon SES](/blog/reloop-vs-aws-ses), or see our [Amazon SES alternative](/alternatives/aws-ses) and [SES comparison](/compare/aws-ses) pages.

## 2. Cloudflare Email Service: best for Workers apps

Cloudflare added outbound sending to its Email Service in a public beta in April 2026. From a Worker it's one binding and one `send()` call, with no API key to store.

**Pricing:** sending to any recipient requires Workers Paid ($5 a month minimum), which includes 3,000 emails, then $0.35 per 1,000. The free plan only sends to addresses you've verified in your own account.

**Strengths**

- Native Workers binding; errors come back with clear codes such as `E_SENDER_NOT_VERIFIED`.
- Cheaper than Reloop above roughly 200k emails a month.
- Inbound via Email Routing, which is generally available.

**Weaknesses**

- Sending is still in public beta.
- Your domain must use Cloudflare DNS.
- Transactional only; templates and dedicated IPs aren't documented. Events go to Cloudflare Queues, not HTTP webhooks.

**Best for:** apps that already live on Workers and only send transactional mail. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Cloudflare Email Service](/blog/reloop-vs-cloudflare-email).

## 3. ZeptoMail: best prepaid, transactional-only option

ZeptoMail from Zoho, now part of Zoho CPaaS, sells email on prepaid credits: one credit sends 10,000 emails, the first one is free, and credits last 6 months.

**Pricing:** about $2.50 per credit (varies by region), so roughly $12.50 for 50,000 and $25 for 100,000 emails.

**Strengths**

- No monthly fee, and cheaper than Reloop above roughly 150,000 emails a month.
- Mail Agents keep products or environments apart, each with its own tokens, domains and stats.
- SMTP relay and REST API, plus SMS, WhatsApp and voice in the wider Zoho CPaaS.

**Weaknesses**

- Marketing mail isn't allowed; accounts that keep sending it get blocked.
- No inbound mailboxes.
- Credits expire after 6 months.

**Best for:** price-sensitive teams sending only transactional mail. Full comparison: [Reloop vs ZeptoMail](/blog/reloop-vs-zeptomail).

## 4. Postmark: best for deliverability focus

Postmark has built its reputation on fast, transactional-first delivery, with separate message streams to keep transactional and broadcast traffic apart.

**Pricing:** free for 100 emails a month. Basic starts at $15 for 10,000, with overage at $1.80 per 1,000 ($1.30 on Pro). That's about $87 at 50,000 and $177 at 100,000 on Basic list price; use Postmark's calculator for an exact tier.

**Strengths:** long transactional-only track record, message streams, excellent docs and support.

**Weaknesses:** far more expensive than SES or Reloop at volume; dedicated IPs are $50 a month from 300k emails; inbound is a webhook on Pro and up; no self-hosting.

**Best for:** teams where every millisecond of reset-email delivery matters and budget doesn't. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Postmark](/blog/reloop-vs-postmark).

---

## 5. Resend: best developer experience

Resend set the bar for a modern email API and created React Email. Worth knowing for SES refugees: **Resend sends through Amazon SES** under the hood, with its own product layer on top.

**Pricing:** free for 3,000 a month (100 a day), $20 for 50,000, $35 for 100,000, overage $0.90 per 1,000.

**Strengths:** clean API and SDKs, React Email, a large ecosystem of examples, broadcasts for simple marketing.

**Weaknesses:** $35 at 100k vs about $10 on SES; a dedicated IP needs the $90 Scale plan plus a $30/mo add-on; inbound is a webhook per message; hosted-only.

**Best for:** teams that want the most polished hosted API and stay under 50k emails a month. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Resend](/blog/reloop-vs-resend).

---

## 6. Mailgun: best for email validation and routing

Mailgun is a long-standing developer email API with inbound routes (match by pattern, then forward or post to a webhook) and email validation as a paid add-on.

**Pricing:** 100 a day on a trial. Basic is $15 for 10,000; Foundation is $35 for 50,000; 100,000 is about $100 with overage from $1.30 per 1,000.

**Strengths:** mature API, inbound routes, Handlebars templates, validation.

**Weaknesses:** expensive at 100k compared with SES or Reloop; dedicated IPs and validation cost extra; marketing is a separate Sinch product.

**Best for:** teams that need validation and inbound routing from one vendor. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Mailgun](/blog/reloop-vs-mailgun).

---

## 7. SendGrid: best for enterprise procurement

SendGrid, part of Twilio, is the default enterprise choice, with subusers, IP pools and a mature compliance program.

**Pricing:** a 60-day trial at 100 a day. Essentials is $19.95 for 50,000 and $34.95 for 100,000. Dedicated IPs, subusers and SSO start on Pro at $89.95.

**Strengths:** full Handlebars templates, enterprise contracts, Marketing Campaigns as an add-on.

**Weaknesses:** marketing is priced separately; no permanent free tier; the features most SES users want (dedicated IP) need Pro.

**Best for:** companies that need a Twilio contract. Full comparison: [Reloop vs SendGrid](/blog/reloop-vs-sendgrid).

---

## 8. Postal: best self-hosted mail server

If you're leaving SES because you'd rather own the sending path entirely, [Postal](https://github.com/postalserver/postal) is a mature, MIT-licensed mail server with an HTTP API, SMTP, webhooks and IP pools with routing rules. There's no hosted version.

**Pricing:** free; you pay for the server. Its minimum is 2 CPU cores, 4 GB RAM and 25 GB disk, with MariaDB 10.6 or newer.

**Strengths:** lightweight, proven MTA; multiple IP pools; no per-email fees.

**Weaknesses:** no stored templates, contacts, campaigns or inbound mailboxes; you own IP reputation, warm-up and uptime.

**Best for:** teams that want a pure, self-run MTA. Reloop is also self-hostable if you want the full platform on your own servers. Full comparison: [Reloop vs Postal](/blog/reloop-vs-postal).

---

## How to choose

- **"We chose SES for the price but spend too much time on glue code."** Reloop. Same idea of cheap sending, with logs, suppression and webhooks built in.
- **"We send millions of emails a month and have a platform team."** Stay on SES, or self-host Reloop to keep zero per-email fees with a product on top.
- **"Our whole app runs on Cloudflare Workers."** Cloudflare Email Service.
- **"We only send transactional mail and want the lowest bill."** ZeptoMail, or Reloop below about 150k a month.
- **"Deliverability is the only thing that matters."** Postmark.
- **"We need inbound mail as real inboxes, for support or AI agents."** Reloop.
- **"We want to run our own mail server."** Postal for a pure MTA, Reloop for the full platform.

## Migrating off Amazon SES

The steps are the same whichever provider you pick:

1. **Verify your domain** with the new provider. Add its DKIM record and merge its include into your existing SPF record; never publish a second SPF record. Keep DMARC in place. Our [SPF, DKIM and DMARC guide](/blog/spf-dkim-dmarc-setup-guide) covers it.
2. **Export your suppression list** from SES's account-level list and your own store, and import it so you don't email addresses that bounced or complained.
3. **Swap the send call.** Replace `SendEmailCommand` with the new SDK. On Reloop, change `{{variable}}` placeholders to `{{{variable}}}`.
4. **Replace the SNS or EventBridge consumer** with a webhook handler. On Reloop, verify the `Reloop-Signature` header.
5. **Ramp traffic** from 10% to 100% over one to two weeks, watching bounce and complaint rates.
6. **Tear down** the configuration sets, SNS topics and Lambda functions you no longer need.
